New report on unmet need for psychosocial support in NSW

The NSW Ministry of Health has released a report to estimate how many people need psychosocial support, what services are currently available, and where the major gaps lie. The analysis used the National Mental Health Services Planning Framework (NMHSPF), Australia’s nationally agreed planning tool for mental health services.

Inside Campbelltown’s community mental health supports

Campbelltown is home to two warm, community-based mental health services offering meaningful, person-centred models of care. NSW Health’s Safe Haven and Grand Pacific Health’s Campbelltown Medicare Mental Health Centre provide safe, accessible spaces where people can seek help early, connect with peers, or find calm during periods of distress.

A new report from the Australian Human Rights Commission shows that age-based discrimination remains widespread and often unrecognised, with significant consequences for wellbeing.

NSW Government response to Loneliness Inquiry: Recognition without resourcing leaves critical gaps

The NSW Government has released its response to the Parliamentary Inquiry into the prevalence, causes and impacts of loneliness in New South Wales. Of the 20 recommendations, 6 were supported, 7 supported in principle, 5 noted and 1 not supported.

Government response to 2024 Drug Summit recommendations leaves key gaps in addressing coexisting challenges

The NSW Government has released its response to the 2024 Drug Summit Report and the 56 recommendations aimed at improving health and wellbeing outcomes for people and communities impacted by drugs. Of these, 36 are supported, 15 supported in principle, 2 noted, 2 for further consideration, and 1 not supported.

Mental Health Peer Workers come together to mark 10 Years of connection and change

Peer workers, advocates and community leaders gathered at Ashfield Town Hall during Mental Health Month to mark 10 years of Mental Health Coordinating Council’s delivery of the CHC43515 Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, a nationally recognised qualification that continues to be a cornerstone of workforce development, leadership and innovation, and amplifying the value of lived experience.

Towards a Human Rights Act for NSW

16th October 2025

Australia remains without a national Human Rights Act, relying instead on a patchwork of state and territory-based acts, other related legislation and international treaties to protect human rights. MHCC has developed a Position Paper with a proposed model for a Human Rights Act for NSW, ahead of forthcoming consultations on the Human Rights Bill 2025, which is currently before the NSW Parliament. Members are invited to share their feedback by emailing corinne@mhcc.org.au

Celebrating over a thousand students in Mental Health Peer Work

This World Mental Health Day during Mental Health Month, we reflect on a decade of progress - marking 10 years since Mental Health Coordinating Council led the redevelopment of the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, a qualification that has provided a collective pathway for people with lived experience to practice peer work and deepen their understanding on its guiding philosophy, to better support others on their recovery journey.

NSW Parliament passes landmark Suicide Prevention Bill

19th September 2025

New South Wales has taken a significant step forward in suicide prevention, with Parliament passing the Suicide Prevention Bill 2025. The new legislation establishes a coordinated, whole-of-government framework to reduce suicide and suicidal distress across the state. It recognises that preventing suicide is not the responsibility of any single service, but a shared commitment across government agencies, communities and individuals.

TheMHS Conference 2025 brings together voices shaping the future of mental health

10th September 2025

Last week in Brisbane, TheMHS Conference 2025: Envisioning 2050 was held from 2–5 September. The event united people with lived experience, carers, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders from across Australia and New Zealand to reflect on the journey of mental health supports, share lived experiences and ignite bold visions for transformative change in the decades ahead.
