The Australian Government, along with all states and territories, released a much-anticipated response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. Out of the 172 recommendations that fall under the Australian Government’s primary or shared responsibility with states and territories, 13 were accepted.
The response from the Australian Government on accepting 13 recommendations out of 172 from the Disability Royal Commission’s Final Report, falls short for people living with psychosocial disability. The Final Report’s recommendations were developed for enhancing laws, policies, structures, and practices to create a more inclusive and equitable society that upholds the independence of individuals with disabilities and ensure they live free from violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation. The Australian Government has failed to fully commit to almost all the recommendations that are cruical for improving the lives of people living with psychosocial disability.
Following on from Mental Health Coordinating Council’s Summary and Overview of the Disability Royal Commission’s Final Report, where we examined each recommendation to understand their significance to the community mental health sector and people with lived experience of mental health, we have identified 74 key recommendations that align with the actions needed to achieve transformational reform and meaningful outcomes for people living with mental health challenges and psychosocial disability. These recommendations will also strengthen the community-managed mental health services that support them. Alarmingly, we found only seven of these recommendations have been fully accepted. Read more in our MHCC Executive Summary.
We urgently call on the government to develop a clear action plan to address the remaining 66 recommendations.
